Here at MOCS, we value the yearly progress our students make in literacy and seek to guard against losing ground. To that end, we ask that every student read at least two Accelerated Reader books of his choice over the summer and take the AR quizzes over the books either during summer school hours or at the beginning of the school year. During summer 2025, we further challenge students to complete row of their choice on the summer reading bingo challenge sheet found below. Each book chosen for the bingo sheet should also be an Accelerated Reader book. You may search the AR bookfinder below. The reading program staff wants our students to continue growing their literacy skills over the summer while still having fun! Book recommendation lists are coming soon.
To supplement the excellent intensive phonics program of our kindergarten through second grades, MOCS has implemented the Renaissance Learning Suite since January 2023. We have successfully used Accelerated Reader to spark a love of reading in both young and mature students alike, and we use Star Literacy as an assessment tool to better understand the strengths and weaknesses of our students while measuring literacy growth. MOCS boasts two well-stocked libraries that are updated yearly. The downstairs library serves our kindergarten through third grade students, and the upstairs library serves the fouth grade and up. The library staff has worked for many years to grow and specially curate collections of books that offer a wide variety of subject matter. While subject matter is diverse, MOCS parents can rest assured that their students will not have access to books that push an LGBTQ+ viewpoint, DEI or CRT views, evolution theory, or contain sensually graphic material.
